There is something almost uncomfortable about reading Kamala Das for the first time. She writes about love without making it beautiful just for the sake of making it beautiful. Her poems talk about wanting someone, needing someone, feeling lonely beside someone, and sometimes realising that physical closeness cannot fill an emotional emptiness.

That honesty is what makes her poetry so memorable.

The Love We Imagine vs. The Love We Get

A lot of us grow up with a certain idea of love. We imagine it as something that makes us feel complete a relationship where we are understood, wanted and cared for. Kamala Das’ poetry often begins with this longing but does not stop at the romantic version of it.

Her speakers want intimacy, but what they experience is often disappointment.

In poems such as “The Looking Glass”, physical intimacy becomes important, but Das makes it clear that desire alone does not create a fulfilling relationship. There is a deeper need underneath it all: the need to be seen as a person and not simply as a body.

That distinction runs through much of her work.

A Woman Talking About Desire

What made Das particularly bold was the way she wrote about female sexuality.

She did not pretend that women were free from desire. She wrote about attraction, the body and sexual experience openly, at a time when these subjects were often considered inappropriate for women to discuss publicly.

But her poems are not simply about wanting sex. They are about what desire means when it is tied to the need for love.

The body may find closeness, but the heart can still remain lonely.

Loneliness Inside a Relationship

Perhaps the most painful part of Das’ poetry is that loneliness does not always come from being alone.

Sometimes, it comes from being with someone who does not really understand you.

This is particularly visible in her poems about marriage and relationships. The relationship may exist outwardly, but emotionally, there can be a huge distance between two people.

That is why her poetry can feel surprisingly modern. Even today, people can experience loneliness while being in relationships that look perfectly happy from the outside.

Why Kamala Das Still Feels So Honest

Das did not write about perfect love. She wrote about complicated love the kind that comes with desire, disappointment, insecurity and longing.

And perhaps that is why her poems continue to connect with readers.

She reminds us that wanting to be loved is not the same as simply wanting someone. There is a difference between being physically close to another person and actually feeling known by them.

For Das, that difference is where much of the pain of love begins.
